The short version: OpenWord stores your vocabulary, notebooks, and learning progress locally on your device. We do not sell your data. We do not require an account to use the app.
1. Information We Collect
OpenWord is designed to work primarily on your device. The information we may collect falls into the following categories:
- Account information (optional): If you choose to sign in with Apple or with an email address, we store your name and email address locally on your device for display purposes.
- Learning data: Your saved words, notebooks, custom categories, review history, and progress statistics are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework.
- Purchase information: Subscription status is provided by Apple's App Store via StoreKit. We never see your payment details.
- Diagnostic data (optional): If you opt in to share crash reports and analytics, anonymous usage data may be collected by Apple. We do not collect this data ourselves.
2. How We Use Your Information
The information stored on your device is used only to:
- Display your learning progress, saved words, and notebooks.
- Personalize your learning experience based on your selected translation language and preferences.
- Sync your subscription entitlement with your Apple ID.
We do not transmit your personal learning data to any server.
3. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. The only third-party service involved is Apple's App Store and StoreKit framework for handling subscriptions, which is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
4. Sign in with Apple
If you choose to use Sign in with Apple, Apple may share your name and email address with the app at your discretion. You can choose to use a private relay email address. This information is stored locally on your device and used only for display purposes within the app.
5. Data Storage and Security
All your data is stored locally on your iOS device using Apple's built-in secure storage frameworks. We use Face ID or Touch ID (if enabled) to protect quick sign-in. Because data does not leave your device, security is largely dependent on the security of your device itself.
6. Children's Privacy
OpenWord does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app is rated 4+ and is suitable for all ages, but it does not include any features that target children specifically or collect identifying information.
7. Your Rights
You have full control over your data:
- Access: All your saved data is visible within the app.
- Export: You can export your notebooks to keep a copy of your vocabulary.
- Deletion: You can delete individual words, notebooks, or your entire account from Profile → Settings → Delete Account. Uninstalling the app also removes all local data.
8. Imported Content
When you import articles or your own word lists, that content is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to us or any third party.
9. Audio & Text-to-Speech
OpenWord uses Apple's on-device AVSpeechSynthesizer for native-voice pronunciation. Audio playback is generated locally and is not sent to any external service.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be communicated within the app.
